Lights On Afterschool returns October 22, and we’re excited to unveil the artwork for the 2026 Lights On Afterschool poster. Sarah R., a 7th grader at South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) in New York, has built a reputation there as a talented artist. Sarah originally joined SAYA’s afterschool program to participate in the art club at her school, where her creativity blossomed: “I met so many incredible teachers there, and I wouldn’t trade that time for anything.”
Established in 1996, South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) afterschool program is one of the first South Asian youth development programs in the United States. It provides an important third space for young people from under-resourced and immigrant communities and plays a critical role in supporting their growth and development.
Sarah is currently part of SAYA’s ARISE program, which she says has had a meaningful impact on her. “It teaches students how to become social advocates for their communities, and I believe it’s crucial to instill this mindset at a young age—especially now. Young people are often the ones driving progress.”
SAYA’s headquarters offer teens a welcoming space with food, technology, games, books, art supplies, and more. Having a dedicated space like this is vital for teens to grow and thrive, ensuring they have access to opportunities to learn about themselves and express their interests.
Sarah hopes to become an anthropologist when she grows up, studying indigenous cultures and how their environments shape their traditions and ways of life. She also looks up to her 7th grade writing teacher. “I admire his passion and confidence in his interests, as well as his wisdom and emotional intelligence.”
Lights On Afterschool will be celebrated at programs across the country on Thursday, October 22.
