Field trips have the power to awaken, hush, awe, enrich and change lives of our children by taking students out of familiar surroundings into new places, connecting classroom learning with real-life experiences and enabling them to envision themselves as future college students, researchers, artists, and leaders.
But it has become difficult for schools to fund learning opportunities outside schools.
It’s true even in New Jersey, home to a rich ecosystem of arts and cultural institutions, a diverse natural landscape and a wide range of higher education resources. Districts across the state are sending students on fewer field trips, with an increasing number of schools passing the bill to parent groups. Studies show that the lack of resources is exacerbated in districts where schools are serving a higher proportion of low-income and at-risk children and their families.
That’s why the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the Community Foundation of New Jersey established a field trip endowment fund to launch Field Trip New Jersey.
Field Trip New Jersey will provide $100,000 in funds annually to help school children in underserved communities across New Jersey access the arts and culture, historical landmarks, nature preserves and science institutions, and college campuses. The fund will make field trips possible for more students across an even wider range of disciplines and interest areas.
