NJSACC and GLSEN look for Partners for 2014’s No Name Calling Week Jan 20-24th! Will you co-sponsor?

Friday, January 17th, 2014

GLSEN, The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

We in GLSEN Central New Jersey were very pleased last year to have the support of After School Programs seem an ideal place to give students the chance to address name-calling and develop positive responses to this problem. This could certainly include participation in the Creative Expression Exhibit that is detailed on the NNCW website.

NJSACC in co-sponsoring No Name Calling Week which is calendared this year forJanuary 20 – 24, 2014. To acknowledge its tenth anniversary, the www.nonamecallingweek.org website has a new look, guiding school communities and youth serving programs to focus on “celebrating kindness” as the key to eliminating name calling, harassment and bullying in our schools.

As you will recall, No Name-Calling Week is a national program that provides students and educators parents and other youth service staff, with the tools and inspiration to challenge name-calling in their communities. Because name-calling and bullying continue to be serious issues in our New Jersey schools and communities, GLSEN Central New Jersey seeks to foster and increase participation in No Name-Calling Week. A wide variety of downloadable materials for students and educators are available at: www.nonamecallingweek.org.

After School Programs seem an ideal place to give students the chance to address name-calling and develop positive responses to this problem. This could certainly include participation in the Creative Expression Exhibit that is detailed on the NNCW website. We encourage every district and program to develop a plan for No Name-Calling Week including participation in the Creative Expression Exhibit that is detailed on the NNCW website at: www.nonamecallingweek.org.

As No Name-Calling Week 2014 approaches, GLSEN Central New Jersey is, once again, seeking to identify partners in New Jersey who will co-sponsor this valuable annual opportunity.

While we are not seeking a monetary contribution as we create a list of organizational NNCW supporters this year, we are mindful of the priceless contribution that you make by advertising NNCW through your website and other media. Our primary aim with this letter is to request your agreement to be a co-sponsor of No Name-Calling Week with the chance for us to use each organization’s name in our promotion of this activity.

Please download the attached Co-Sponsorship form below. We request that each co-sponsoring organization disseminate information about No Name Calling Weekto their members and allows GLSEN Central New Jersey to include the organization in our publicity about NNCW.

While our timeline is short, we are eager to hear that NJSACC will again for 2014 agree to be a co-sponsor in New Jersey of No Name-Calling Week. Organizations in New Jersey will be joining an extensive list of distinguished national co-sponsors of this Week and helping us to take further steps toward the guarantee of safe and welcoming schools for all students.

Thank you for consideration of this request. We look forward to partnering with NJSACC in the upcoming No Name-Calling Week. Below is a short blurb that could be used for a website, newsletter, Facebook or other outreach.

You are also welcome to recommend other organizations who would be interested in co-sponsoring No Name Calling Week, 2014.

Get ready for “No Name-Calling Week”

Every child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. That’s why NJSACC has joined forces with GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network) Central New Jersey Chapter to promote No Name-Calling Week during January 20-24, 2014. No Name Calling Week (NNCW) is a national initiative started in 2004. The concept of NNCW builds on the story in the young adult novel by James Howe, The Misfits. In this story a group of students join forces to face the challenges of name calling and ultimately make a powerful impact on their school with the proposal of a no name calling day. This year’s No Name Calling Weekfocuses on Celebrating Kindness while working to create safe schools free of name-calling, bullying and bias.

Educators can join the NNCW Listserv and download a variety of free materials at: www.nonamecallingweek.org. GLSEN also sponsors The National Creative Expression Exhibit for NNCW. This exhibit gives students the opportunity to submit works of art that express their ideas and experiences with bullying. In 2011, over 1,000 students submitted pieces from a variety of artistic mediums. For details visit: www.nonamecallingweek.org.

Additional information and assistance in developing No Name-Calling Weekprograms as well as a limited supply of free materials can be arranged by contacting GLSEN Central New Jersey Chapter at: cnj@njglsen.org. By the way, each school and program is welcome to choose any time of the year to offer No Name-Calling Week. The immediacy of the national dates, January 20-24, does not need to be a constraint for your program.
