Part-time, independent contractor position

Overview

Creative New Jersey (CNJ) is a statewide initiative dedicated to fostering creativity, innovation, and sustainability by empowering cross-sector partnerships in commerce, education, philanthropy, government, and culture, in order to ensure dynamic communities and a thriving economy.

Creative New Jersey’s vision is:

  • For all New Jerseyans to develop their capacities for imagination, creativity and innovation;
  • For cross-sector partnerships to flourish and enhance creative problem-solving, and for New Jersey to establish more creative work places, schools, and communities; and
  • For New Jersey to continue to attract the best creative minds and leaders who recognize and champion the value of creativity, innovation and sustainability.

CNJ’s core programming consists of a statewide series of Calls to Collaboration which focus on championing creativity as the vehicle for developing innovative solutions to support sustainable, thriving communities. The convenings utilize Open Space Technology, a highly-scalable and adaptable meeting format which creates unique opportunities for intentional, action-oriented discussions among diverse groups of people to explore areas of collaboration, and to share resources and information. The community-building power of this process comes from participants creating the agenda together, and subsequently self-organizing to lead group discussions about creative solutions to a central community question. It unleashes the leadership of every participant who is passionate about the issue at hand and wants to take action.

Launched by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, CNJ has produced one statewide and five community based Calls to Collaboration as well as one statewide World Café since 2011. CNJ has launched Creative Monmouth, Creative Morristown, Creative Rahway and Creative Orange. Creative Trenton is currently underway with the Call to Collaboration expected to be held in November 2013. Creative NJ will be of service to six Hurricane Sandy disaster-affected communities by developing and producing community engagement opportunities to assist residents, municipal leaders, state/local planners, business owners, local nonprofits, mental health professionals, and others in coming together to engage in critical dialogue around the issues of recovery and rebuilding.

Even though the specific agenda is not known until the participants create it during the convening’s first hour, there is a prescribed structure from which we operate which ensures a successful convening. Our programming empowers citizens, and gives them a framework for receiving information, building consensus, and taking action towards a more creative and sustainable community.

Communications Coordinator Position

Creative New Jersey is looking to hire a part-time Communications Coordinator to assist CNJ’s Director and Program Manager in implementing the mission of CNJ and to carry out the specific duties involved with launching our creative communities and the Calls to Collaboration, including our engagement work in Hurricane Sandy impacted communities.

Specific Duties include:

  1. Plan, organize and implement overall communication strategies; create and distribute on-going communication, feedback, and information from CNJ to the field via: email updates; postings on the website, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets; participation in a variety of committee meetings and statewide events.
  2. Manage and create new content for CNJ’s website, Facebook and twitter accounts.
  3. Solicit and manage information from our creative communities before and after the Call to Collaboration; includes collecting updates and anecdotal stories for publishing on the website, FB, Twitter, and in newsletters.
  4. Create, write, and distribute CNJ News (an online newsletter) every 6 to 8 weeks.
  5. Serve as the media contact; write and distribute press releases for CNJ announcements (as needed) and work with the local Host Team members to assist them in writing and distributing their local releases.
  6. Participate in meetings and statewide events/activities as a representative of CNJ when appropriate.
  7. Work to ensure the mission of Creative New Jersey is being fulfilled.

Additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned as Creative NJ’s work expands and grows throughout the state.

General Qualifications

The ideal candidate:

  • possesses strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • has in-depth knowledge about New Jersey’s nonprofit sector; strong relationships with the arts, education and sustainability sectors are a plus;
  • has 2+ years of marketing, communications, media or public relations experience;
  • has the ability to work independently and as a member of a team; able to balance competing priorities;
  • is comfortable speaking in front of large and small groups;
  • is flexible and able to navigate issues/changes as they arise with clear and level-headed thinking.

Specific Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; preferably in marketing, English/journalism or a related communications field a plus;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the nonprofit sector, preferably in NJ;
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, web-based platforms and communication software (such as WordPress and Mailchimp), and social media;
  • Proven competency in creative writing.

Compensation: this job is a part-time, independent contractor (fee-based) position, and is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Recovery Fund. The contract is for 12 months, at approximately 30 to 35 hours per month, for a total flat annual fee of $7,500. Creative NJ does not have a central office and therefore, the Communications Coordinator must be able to work from her/his home office and work hours are flexible. The Communications Coordinator reports to Creative NJ’s Director.
