Last day to register: Afterschool Hands-On Science Training

21St Century Afterschool Science Project (21st CASP)The 21st Century Afterschool Science Project is a 21 lesson curriculum designed to enrich student learning through inquiry-based, interactive science experiences using every day materials.  Developed in partnership with Liberty Science Center, this fun and engaging “water” curriculum is easy to implement and reinforces the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in science, literacy, and math. This project was pilot tested and evaluated over a 2 year period.  The evaluation demonstrated successes on many fronts including:*    Creating a replicable model designed for afterschool, OST and extended-day programs to implement science programming;

*     Increasing OST staff capacity to facilitate science learning in the afterschool setting;

*    Increased student engagement, skill and knowledge related to science;

*     Developing and piloting curricular materials tailored for the OST setting, which imbed math and language arts components, and which are grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and inquiry-based learning; and

*    Involving families in hands-on science, math and language arts activities in support of their children’s learning.

This training is relevant for all afterschool providers and is especially geared for those without science background, as is the entire model.
This training will provide afterschool staff with a free science curriculum funded by the New Jersey Department of Education.

“This project was funded in its entirety with federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by No Child Left Behind, Title IV, Part B, 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant funds through a grant agreement with the New Jersey Department of Education.”

All participants will receive a CD copy of the curriculum.

Participants will receive 2.5 hours of professional development hours.

An adventure based Conflict Resolution Curriculum.

This workshop is to help staff in school-age child care settings teach children effective, nonviolent ways to resolve conflict.

This workshop is developed to meet the unique needs of school-age child care providers and provide assistance in the following areas:

  1. Implementing instruction in key conflict resolution concepts
  2. Further developing children skills using experiential education strategies
  3. Developing approaches for resolving conflict in child care settings

The Program Focuses on “The Peaceable Program” model and uses an Adventure based approach to teaching Conflict Resolution.

Children’s Futures has been opening doors to better lives for families in Trenton, New Jersey since 2001 through the generous support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. As part of the Foundation’s Vulnerable Populations Portfolio, focusing on examining the critical relationships between health and where and how people live, work, learn and play, Children’s Futures leads a collaboration of public agencies and nonprofit community organizations seeking to strengthen parenting, improve access to primary health and child care systems, and increase social supports.

Practices to Foster and Avoid in Out-of-School Time Programs


To improve outcomes for youth in out-of-school time programs, two new Child Trends briefs highlight 10 practices to foster and 10 practices to avoid.

Among the top 10 practices to foster:

  1. Positive and sustained relationships with caring adults.
  2. An organizational culture that focuses on the whole child, including physical and mental health, as well as academic, social, and emotional development.
  3. Engaging and varied activities
Among the top 10 practices to avoid:
  1. Negative approaches based on scaring children.
  2. Lecturing.
  3. Just focusing on “squelching” bad behaviors.

Americans Make 2010 King Holiday a Day On, Not a Day Off

Hundreds of Thousands Serve in More than 10,000 Projects

Hundreds of thousands of Americans joined in volunteer service projects across the country as part of the 2010 Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama joined cabinet secretaries, elected officials, nonprofit and business leaders, and Americans of all ages and backgrounds in rolling up their sleeves to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. More than 10,000 service projects took place in all 50 states, addressing a multitude of pressing social issues from poverty and hunger to homelessness and the Haitian crisis.

Americans made it a “a day on, not a day off” by delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, reading to children, providing employment counseling, and more. Many organizations use the day as a springboard for year-round civic action. The King Day of Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the King Center in partnership with nonprofit, education, business, and other organizations around the country.

“In New Jersey, volunteers kicked off a semester of service by organizing multiple book drives. Twenty-four Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations throughout New Jersey accepted employee and customer book donations in the two weeks leading up to MLK Day. Over MLK Weekend, volunteers brought books to 4 New Jersey After 3 after-school programs. Volunteers will continue to serve by launching a “Speak Out & Listen Up” campaign — a 13 week long curriculum that will allow 4,500 students and 2,000 family and community members in the New Jersey After 3 network to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King.”
