N.J. AUDUBON SOCIETY HONORS NJSACC DIRECTOR DIANE GENCO

Genco Honored For Linking Afterschool and Environmental Education

NJSACC Executive Director Diane Genco was Awarded NJ Audubon’s Patricia F. Kane “Excellence in Environmental Education” at the organization’s annual dinner on October 23, 2009 in Cape May, NJ..

Genco was recognized for developing a statewide campaign to link environmental educators with afterschool programs.
The campaign, Celebrate Afterschool:  Outdoors in the Garden State launched in spring 2009 with nature festivals,
hands-on workshops, and community events that inspire learning, and connect children with their communities and
the natural world.

“Afterschool programs have a unique opportunity,” says Diane Genco, executive director of NJSACC the network
for New Jersey’s afterschool communities, which organized the event. “Afterschool programs can work with children in creative ways that aren’t bound by high stakes testing goals or by 45 minute blocks of time.”

The award is given annually to an individual/team that demonstrates outstanding effort/dedication in connecting people to the natural world through formal and informal education.

Performance Learning Centers  Job Description
Executive Director
Overview

Performance Learning Centers® (PLCs) are Communities In Schools’ network of small, nontraditional high schools. First implemented by CIS of Georgia in the 2002–2003 school year, they are direct descendents of the “street academies” that formed the nucleus of Communities In Schools in the early 1970s.  Today, there are more than 30 operational PLCs in the CIS network.  There are currently two PLCs in New Jersey, both located in Newark.

PLCs are academically rigorous and college preparatory high schools, targeting young people who have not succeeded in a traditional learning environment.  Through a self-paced curriculum, students are able to make up credits they have lost through absenteeism, academic struggles or disengagement from school.

Performance Learning Centers are based on a framework of six central pillars:
•    A Professional Training Environment
•    A Self-Managed Performance Track
•    A Positive School Climate
•    A High-Tech/Hands-On Curriculum
•    Post-Graduation Preparation
•    Community Engagement

Building on these pillars, PLCs contain a number of elements that make them a unique learning environment and contribute to their success.  PLCs average only 75–150 students per site.  A low student/teacher ratio of 15:1 provides students with one-on-one attention from staff.  Students are empowered by developing and managing their own performance track through a high-tech/hands-on curriculum that meets state education requirements.  Students can enter a post-secondary education track through dual enrollment at a college or technical school.  Services coordinators assist students with non-academic issues that may affect their school performance.  PLCs are more like professional training environments than classrooms. Students build critical thinking and teamwork strategies through project-based learning.
