CANFit
California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness (CANFit) – was founded in 1993 and has since become a leader in providing culturally appropriate nutrition and physical activity assistance and resources to organizations across the country. Because of the lack of resources that address cultural issues and the needs of low income ethnic youth, CANFit (www.canfit.org ) focuses primarily on programs with low income African-American, American Indian, Latino, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander youth. Many of these populations also have limited access to affordable healthy foods and safe places for physical activity, and suffer disproportionately from health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
I recommend CANFit as they are reality based. This organization knows the limited resources that afterschol programs have and know that if youth do not like a project or activity they will walk. Many of their materials are free (downloadable from web site in Spanish too!) or inexpensive. The activities are youth tested and the foods are too! CANFit is also current with what youth want in a HIP-HOP Generation.
A new great free resource is the Healthy Snack Guide for Your After School Program is now available on their web site with 26 menus, two-week sample cycle menus, funding options and Best Practice Guidelines.
The guide makes it easier for after school programs to provide healthier snacks for the youth you serve.
