STEM INSTITUTE!

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

NJSACC: The Network for New Jersey’s Afterschool Communities  presents:

The Summer STEM Institute:
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Awareness and Hands-On Activities

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is quickly becoming an important aspect of Out-of-School Time (OST) programs, afterschool programs and expanded learning opportunities.
Our youth, especially those in the younger grades, do not get adequate STEM activities, even though science, and related topics are appearing on standardized tests. These programs have the time and flexibility to include STEM into their activities. Although it may seem scary, STEM doesn’t need to be intimidating or have a significant cost and it is likely that your programs are already doing some STEM based activities without even realizing it.

This two day training is hands-on, and will provide easy and cost effective activities, as well as practical strategies for how your programs can create an informal environment to provide youth with time for exploration and discovery of STEM skills while creating an interest in the STEM fields.

As part of NJSACC’s Full STEM Ahead Initiative, participants in the Summer STEM Institute will leave with 2 NPASS2 Curriculum Guides,* the Science Afterschool *NJ Waterwaysand ideas, resources and lesson plans from other nationally recognized afterschool STEM curriculums.

Presenter: Mike MacEwan, Director for 21st CCLC and STEM Initiatives, NJSACC
Date: August 17-18, 2011
Location: NJSACC Office @ the First Baptist Church
170 Elm St
Westfield, NJ 07090

Time: 10 am to 3pm each day

Cost: $ 75 (includes Curricula and Lunch each day)

SAVE THE DATE! At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program SUMMIT

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Please save the date and plan to join us on Friday, September 16th, from 8:30-11:30am for an At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program SUMMIT.

If you work with an afterschool program in an at-risk area and you’d like to be able to provide full meals for the youth, this is for you.

The At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program is a federal child nutrition program that’s new to New Jersey. If your afterschool program is eligible, you can get reimbursement from the federal government for providing full meals to your youth.

At this summit, we will learn more about the program, have ample time for Q&A, and work together to find solutions to some common barriers so that more afterschool programs can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

We have not yet finalized a location, but we are aiming to hold the summit in New Brunswick. Please save the date today!
