Citizen Schools – New Jersey

In New Brunswick and Newark

Teaching Associate – P/T Afterschool Leadership and Educator Positions

Teaching Associates are the heart and soul of the Citizen Schools’ program – the front line team leaders who work closely with our students and their families to help transform lives. Each Teaching Associate leads a team of 8-12 students, supporting academic achievement and facilitating hands-on, apprenticeship learning activities led by caring adult volunteers. Teaching Associates provide individualized academic coaching, deliver school navigation curriculum, teach and support apprenticeships, design and implement leadership and teambuilding activities, lead field trips, and provide hands-on learning experiences that culminate in high-quality student performances and promote self-confidence. As well, Teaching Associates are responsible for managing student behavior, engaging students in program elements, relationship building with students’ families through weekly phone communications and serving as mentors. This role requires a serious commitment of time and energy, both during and outside of program hours. The Teaching Associate commitment for the academic year is approximately 22-30 hours per week, depending on the campus placement.

Our learning model includes hands-on apprenticeships, homework support, activities to build organizational and study skills, community explorations, and teambuilding. Citizen Schools focuses on skill development – particularly in the areas of writing, data analysis, and oral communication – and links closely to school activities and learning standards. Citizen Schools turns children into community heroes: children apprentice with lawyers, web designers, architects – culminating their learning apprenticeships by arguing trials before federal judges, designing web sites for their school, organizing public events, publishing newspapers, and much more.

Responsibilities Include:

Program Time Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 8-12 middle school students during program hours (~ 20 hours per week). In general, the Citizen Schools program operates 4 days per week from approximately 1:00-6:00 PM (this differs slightly at select campuses). The Newark site operates 5-days per week.
  • Design and lead activities to build team and Citizen Schools pride
  • Assist volunteer Citizen Teachers in planning and teaching Apprenticeships (hands-on learning experiences that culminate in high-quality products or performances)
  • Build relationships with families through weekly phone calls
  • Implement several Boston Explorations
  • Serve as mentors that demonstrate and emphasize the high expectations of the program

Non-Program Time Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly, two-hour campus staff meeting (time to be decided by each campus group) to help debrief the week’s activities and plan powerfully for the coming lessons
  • Spend two hours per week to plan upcoming activities, call students and parents, and meet with colleagues
  • Attend Citizen Schools’ professional development and training sessions, including a training week for all campuses one week prior to the beginning of program each semester and trainings on one Friday afternoon of each month
  • Optional: Attend Citizen Schools’ All-Staff meetings on the first Friday of every month

Teaching Associates should be thoroughly committed to hands-on, active, community-based learning as a vital complement to traditional school-based education. Candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Relevant experience working with children and demonstrated ability to engage children
  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to education and community based learning
  • Excellent writing, data analysis, and communication skills
  • Proven ability to engage and organize peers and other adults to meet program goals
  • Demonstrated time and project management skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse groups of people; ability to and provide/receive constructive feedback
  • Sense of humor
  • Embodiment of Citizen Schools’ values: Pride, Joy, Respect, Courage, Teamwork, Perseverance, and Vision
  • College degree preferred
  • Bilingualism preferred
